5 REASONS YOU SHOULD DO A FIRST LOOK
Traditionally, the groom doesn’t see the bride until she is walking down the aisle. After photographing many weddings, this has become my favorite moment of the ceremony. When all others are looking toward the bride, I am watching the groom and capturing the pure adoration and love on his face as he sees his bride, all dressed up in her wedding gown, walking down the aisle to marry him. However, this tradition has become outdated and is slowly being replaced with a more intimate first look moment between only the bride and the groom – and the photographer, of course. So I’m sure you’re wondering which is better for you – the traditional first look during the ceremony or the new, more intimate first look before the ceremony? Let me help you decide by telling you the 5 reasons you should do a first look on your wedding day.
IT CALMS YOUR NERVES
Your wedding day is this huge, important day that you spent months – sometimes years – planning for. You have considered every option, made all the important decisions, planned everything to the smallest of details. Then when the big day arrives and all of the planning is done, the nerves start to settle in. This is it. The day you’re going to marry your best friend. You can’t help but worry about things going amiss or that you’ll fumble your words during the vows, but you know it all won’t matter as soon as you see your husband-to-be. By planning to do a first look this moment comes a lot sooner. A first look allows you to have a private moment – before the ceremony – where the two of you can spend time together and calm each other’s nerves before walking down the aisle.
FIRST LOOKS SAVE TIME
Your day is going to be busy. Between getting ready, the ceremony, formal pictures, and then the reception, you won’t have very many free moments just to yourselves. Having a first look can sometimes help free up some more time after the ceremony. Without a first look, all of the formal pictures have to be taken in the time between the ceremony and reception. This means that it cuts into your driving around time if you rented a bus or limo for the bridal party. By having a first look, you can take half of your formal pictures (bridal party photos) before the ceremony. Then after the ceremony you only have the formal family pictures to take – thus allowing you to board the bus or limo earlier.
FIRST LOOKS ARE INTIMATE AND PERSONAL
Traditionally, the first look doesn’t happen until you’re walking down the aisle, and it’s in front of everyone. Some people might love the idea of their friends and family being a part of this memorable moment, but others may wish to make it more private. On the other hand, if you have a private first look, you will be guaranteed a personal, intimate moment between only you and your fiancé.
YOU LOOK YOUR BEST
Lots of time and money is spent on helping you look your best on your wedding day. Sometimes by the time you get to the picture portion of the day your hair may be a little windblown, curls may have lost some of their spring, and your makeup might be a little smudged. Heat, wind, and rain happen. I mentioned earlier that time is freed up when you have a first look, allowing you to get some of the formal pictures out of the way before the ceremony. Well, when this happens you are sure to look your best in at least most of your formal pictures.
YOU GET MORE IMAGES
This one is simple. Having a first look frees up time. Free time usually means more pictures. When I find extra time in the schedule I like to sneak off the bride and groom for some more pictures. Or we can take this time to get pictures with friends and family that aren’t normally included in the family formals.
So there you have it. Five reasons you should choose to do a first look on your wedding day. It calms your nerves, it saves you time, it’s intimate and personal, you look your best, and you usually get more photos as a result. If a first look isn’t your thing and you want to go the traditional route, that is fine too! It’ll all work out and you will still have amazing photos of your wedding day!
